Crews in the region began the pioneering scheme in helping to deliver life-saving treatment to people who had suffered cardiac arrests. But it has been unpopular with some firefighters who have complained they are being sent as first responders to some medical emergencies for which they do not have appropriate training.
In August the Fire Brigades Union first threatened not to attend such incidents, but negotiations continued to try and resolve the issue. But union bosses say that from Monday they will stop responding to these calls as part of the dispute. When the scheme was launched in September it was meant to be a six month trial – not a two-year one. We were hoping that there would be an offer in terms of increased pay to recompense firefighters for the extra responsibility, bit the offer never came.
In view of the cuts that have been imposed I do not think management have the right to question crews morality. But only one per cent of that will be funded by central government. The other per cent will have to be found by the brigade – that can only be achieved by further cuts. The brigade chiefs are not happy at all and have been trying emotional blackmail to try and avert the action.

The History of Fire Fighting Fire Fighting, techniques and equipment used to extinguish fires and limit the damage caused by them. Fire fighting consists of removing one or more of the three elements essential to combustion-fuel, heat, and oxygen-or of interrupting the combustion chain reaction. Fire Departments The Roman emperor Augustus is credited with instituting a corps of fire-fighting vigiles “watchmen” in 24 BC.
Regulations for checking and preventing fires were developed. In the preindustrial era most cities had watchmen who sounded an alarm at signs of fire. The principal piece of fire-fighting equipment in ancient Rome and into early modern times was the bucket, passed from hand to hand to deliver water to the fire. Another important fire-fighting tool was the ax, used to remove the fuel and prevent the spread of fire as well as to make openings that would allow heat and smoke to escape a burning building.
In major conflagrations long hooks with ropes were used to pull down buildings in the path of an approaching fire to create firebreaks. When explosives were available, they would be used for this same purpose. Following the Great Fire of London in , fire brigades were formed by insurance companies. The government was not involved until , when these brigades became London’s Metropolitan Fire Brigade. John Barned-Smith The Justice Department has sued the city of Houston over sex discrimination claims launched by two female firefighters who say their male coworkers tormented them by urinating on the women’s bathroom walls and sinks and scrawling vulgar slurs on their belongings. Male firefighters allegedly turned off the cold water in showers to scald their female coworkers and disconnected speakers to prevent women from responding to calls in a string of bad behavior that eventually escalated to death threats, according to the lawsuit.
The city did not comment on the suit, while the firefighters’ union pushed to see more evidence released in the case and decried long-standing criticism of the department. The claims at the center of the DOJ case first drew attention nearly ten years ago, when Draycott and Keyes reported finding racist and sexist graffiti scrawled on the women’s dorm walls in summer But the problems started months before that, according to court filings.
As the only women working at Station 54 when they started, Draycott and Keyes were often ignored for entire shifts when their male coworkers refused to talk to them or eat with them. Inside Draycott’s locker, someone wrote “dead” on a picture of her daughter who’d been killed in a car wreck and “die” on a picture of Draycott, according to filings. At the time, department was already reeling amid other racial discrimination accusations after two noose-like knots were found in firehouses.
The FBI and the city’s Office of Inspector General both looked into the women’s allegations, but in the end they decided there wasn’t enough evidence to pinpoint a culprit. The scandal, nevertheless, cast a shadow over HFD, and was one factor that led then-Mayor Annise Parker to search for an outside candidate to lead the department. When Draycott returned to work in early following her complaints, she alleged, HFD retaliated against her by letting her coworkers publicly disparage her.
