Helping gamers rage less and enjoy their games more. With a few weeks since my last heavy dose of Destiny I have found the grind to be a bit more entertaining and fresh. Who I ended up playing with, however, was a very different experience than when I first ventured into the Destiny universe. Most of my friends have moved on to other games, and using LFG sites for runs on The Prison of Elders or a Nightfall just seems like overkill. So is it time for Destiny to get the dreaded m-word added to it? Thankfully I have an awesome stream community with a rotating door of people willing to jump in and play. So we played almost every level of The Prison and even a Nightfall with almost no talking. And every 30 minutes or so someone would have to leave and another person would cycle in.

The plot is shallow, filled with characters that are generic, lifeless, and utterly devoid of any reason as to why you might care about them. The main baddy, Gaul, has no motivation for anything he does other than “he’s a bad guy”, no backstory, and no reason for doing anything he does. The NPC protagonists are lifeless, flat, 2-dimensional objects who serve no purpose except as narrative devices to further what can only generously be called a plot.

The most complex, challenging content in the game is Vault of Glass, a six-player raid. Unfortunately, it’s a bit hard to actually venture into the Vault because there’s no matchmaking system in.

But this guy explained it in a simple way, that seems to get the point across. Then I watched it again. I really did miss what Luke Smith was outlining for Raids. I am guilty of not seeing the trees through the forest. Not sure if it is because most of the last 15 plus years I have mainly been an FPS player, the fact that Bungie made Halo – a game I have loved and played since the beginning – or because of distractions while watching the video.

It doesn’t really matter. Here is why I came to understand that. Destiny is truly different from what I and many others are used to. It is a grouping of a few different experiences drawn from FPS, open world exploration, campaign, MMO – Bungie calls in a shared world shooter for a good reason. Here is an analogy I hope you all can follow and appreciate, so read it through.

Compare Destiny to a camp ground at the base of a tall mountain. I know, but stick with me. You can take your family and friends camping in the campground at the base of the mountain.

Luckily for those wanting to enjoy the online aspects but don’t have a steady group of friends to enjoy the co-op option, BioWare has confirmed that matchmaking will be available at launch for all content.

Much of the story can be done solo but there are certain in-game events available to earn higher level gear that does require four people. For those that don’t have a squad, matchmaking will be available so no one has to miss out on any part of the game.

Despite how I felt about it then, it did have a few things going for it such as the shooting mechanics which were really good and some of the concepts that its bare bones narrative grasped at straws to try and explain. The disastrous interview with Luke Smith, the creative director behind Destiny, with Eurogamer initially turned me off of buying the expansion. Then I realized I had a rebate coupon that I could use to knock the price down and an insatiable curiosity to know if it actually could be better.

The rest is installation history. For me, Destiny always seemed weirdly late to the party in the face of other systems in the gaming space that used the same elements albeit more successfully. Whether it was a bold attempt to try something new and not getting it, I have no idea. Just that Destiny seemed to want to do things its own way leading to some strange decisions such as forcing everyone to visit a website to check on whatever lore they had uncovered via its card system in-game.

Games such as Xenosaga in had the gall to include an in-game encyclopedia for its lore. A disc containing a vanilla copy of Destiny was also included. The codes worked just fine for those with a Digital Only version like me. TTK addresses a lot of why I abandoned Destiny in the first place. This is just me plugging through the campaign stuff with the occasional matchmaking for campaign strike missions. Cabal soldiers with shields in this form can use their shields to emit a repulsion field hurling you yards away or off buildings.
