History[ edit ] Birstall’s name is derived from the Anglian burh and stall meaning a fortified site. Birstall is not mentioned in the Domesday Book but is alluded to as one of two settlements in Gomersal. Pigot’s National Commercial Directory for listed it as one of the four villages which make up the township of Gomersal. The hill fort itself would have been situated high above the village, to one side of the present-day Raikes Lane, which heads towards Gildersome , and onto Leeds. In prehistoric days, trackways ran in various directions from one British settlement to another, one such settlement being on the top of Birstall Hill. This site was chosen for its central location amongst the nearby waterways and its accessibility to and from other nearby hill forts, such as Castle Hill at Almondbury in Huddersfield and Barwick-in-Elmet , near Leeds. This location would give Birstall a great geographical advantage, making it within easy reach of the main thoroughfares of ancient Yorkshire.

In medieval times the forest park was used as common pasture land, as a source of wood and sandstones for buildings and walls. Saxon and Medieval[ edit ] The majority of the early development of the town dates from Saxon times and was part of an extensive manor granted by King Athelstan to the see of York. The Archbishops of York had a residence and were lords of the manor. Their palace was located on the site occupied by the Manor House. As in other areas of the north, the Norman conquest largely laid waste this area.

Have your say will be the year the travelling public start to see the benefits of West Yorkshire and other northern regions working together as one on transport policy, according to a senior figure responsible for drawing a strategy for the North. Transport for the North will become the first strategic body of its type on April 1, meaning the Government will have to take its views into account when deciding where it allocates vital infrastructure funding.
Among the improvements will be the introduction of smart technology on rail season tickets across the region, meaning commuters will get a smart card rather than a paper ticket when they renew. Rail operators have also promised a number of tangible improvements. Perhaps the most eye-catching will be the 65 Azuma trains which will enter service at the start of the December timetable on the East Coast Mainline, which stops at Leeds between London and Edinburgh.
As part of the roll-out the new train, which reaches pm in less than five minutes, will stop at new destinations including Middlesbrough and will regularly go between London and Leeds in two hours. Inter-city services around the region will also benefit from new rolling stock. Northern, which runs rail services around West Yorkshire and has pledged to get rid of its much-maligned Pacer trains by , will next year introduce the first of its 98 new trains as part of a modernisation programme.
They will be capable of travelling at mph, will be fully air conditioned, have electronic seat reservation systems, CCTV, power sockets and free wifi. TransPennine Express will in the second half of be rolling out the first of its state-of-the-art intercity train carriages which will reach speeds of up to mph and cut journey times.
There will be more frequent services, including six trains an hour between Leeds and Manchester.
Tuesday 19 January 16 John Ogden, who later moved to Askrigg, was baptised in at nearby Elland church, also the son of a James Ogden, then said to be of Soyland, but the big question is whether it was the same James Ogden, who was the father of each. If so, as seems very likely, then Samuel and John were brothers. The problem is that John Ogden was a well-known Quaker, yet there is no evidence so far that Samuel was – though he may have been. We know his sons Thomas and Isaac, who remained at Ripponden, were Quakers.

A to Z listing Golfing in Yorkshire Yorkshire is certainly the biggest of the six areas in the north of England in size and as well with golf courses. There are around courses located within its borders. There are some big name venues in this region as well as some lesser-known courses, better known as ‘hidden gems’. One of the best examples of the latter is the Donald Steel-designed layout that’s situated just three miles north of Howden, Boothferry Park.
Steel’s meadowland course is a great test for any level of player as many of the holes involve playing over water, or natural dykes. Stay dry, and you should be fine. Harrogate is a golf club that’s famous not only for its golf course, but also its year-old colonial style clubhouse. The course is fairly flat but incorporates plenty of strategically placed bunkers, and, although not overly long, can put good golfers in big trouble quite easily.
Huddersfield is another of the older clubs in the north and boasts a quite colourful history. Another exhibition match took place in , this time involving Peter Oosterhuis and Gary Player. Ganton was the star of the show at the walker Cup, with players on both sides commenting on how the course made the biennial contest a truly great spectacle.

Some of the women and their children are from Halifax, others from further afield: For many, it was the first time they had left home that week. Florence cuts a striking figure as she delivers the notices: Veeca — known as Vee — explains why she and Florence set up the group, which supports around 50 women of 17 nationalities at weekly meetings.
So many were at home, suicidal and depressed. We do know, and we try to bridge the gap. For 33 year-old Florence, the details of her past are too painful to recount; the abuse she experienced led to utter despair. I was so desperate, I had no one. Because there are women out there with even less support. But when an immersion tank in one of the flats above hers crashed through two floors in the block, and the extractor hood fell from above her oven cutting her arm, her sanctuary began to feel unsafe.
After applying for asylum and being sent with her three children to Halifax, her main concern was their safety. But when she arrived she found the flat she had been allocated was unclean, there were no chairs and the oven and boiler were broken.
